Last night’s Tony Awards saw the glitterati of Broadway gather together for an evening of celebration and recognition for the past year’s theatrical achievements. Among the nominees, London plays and West End performers dominated. And though some of our homegrown talents won, it was Harry Potter And The Cursed Child and The Band’s Visit that swept the award board.

The nine-time Olivier Award-winning Harry Potter And The Cursed Child who won six awards – the most won by a single play. The Sonia Friedman production based on a new story by Jack Thorne, JK Rowling and John Tiffany claimed the Best Play award while John took Best Director.

The Band’s Visit – an Israeli musical based on the 2007 film of the same name – won a whopping 10 awards out of its possible 11. The show which tells the tale of an Egyptian police orchestra who are stranded for a night in a remote Israeli village took home the awards for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical (Tony Shalhoub), Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical (Katrina Lenk), and Best Musical among others.

Other West End favourites who took home the gold include Andrew Garfield who won Best Actor for Angels In America, Glenda Jackson who won Best Actress for Edward Albee’s Three Tall Women, and Angels In America which took Best Revival Of A Play.
