Singin’ In The Rain has announced it will end its Olivier Award nominated run at the Palace theatre in June and will pack up its umbrellas to head off on a UK tour.
Jonathan Church’s critically acclaimed production opened at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2011 before transferring to the West End last February to win London audiences over with its old-fashioned charm and splashtastic choreography.
The show, which famously recycles 12,000 litres of water per performance to reenact the iconic scene from the 1952 MGM film it’s based on, will end its run at the Palace theatre on 9 June with original West End cast member Adam Cooper leading the cast as Don Lockwood.
Featuring songs including Good Morning, Make ‘Em Laugh and, of course, Singin’ In The Rain, the classic musical is set during a period of change in Hollywood, when silent movies look set to be replaced by a new kind of film where the actors actually talk… and sing… and dance.
Cooper is joined in the company by Louise Bowden, Stephane Annelli and Jennifer Ellison, who plays the squeaky-voiced Lina Lamont.
Commenting on the show’s forthcoming departure, Stage Entertainment UK’s Rebecca Quigley said: “We’ve had a wonderful run at the Palace theatre and everyone at Stage Entertainment is so proud to have been part of making it a hit there. I’d like to thank everybody at the theatre and every single member of the Singin’ family who’ve made the show the success it is, and of course the hundreds of thousands of smiling audience members who’ve been part of the experience.”
Looking ahead to its UK tour which will begin in November, Quigley said: “We’re thrilled that the show will now set off around the country to delight and, in the case of some sections of the stalls, soak many more people to come!”
No announcements have yet been made as to what show – which presumably has big wellies to fill – will follow Singin’ In The Rain into the Palace theatre.
