Soul Sister, the musical inspired by the music, life and times of musicians Ike and Tina Turner, will play a limited season at the Savoy theatre this summer.

Starring Emi Wokoma and Chris Tummings as the famously destructive couple, John Miller and Pete Brooks’ production will play in the West End from 20 August to 29 September.

Soul Sister, which charts legendary singer Tina Turner’s rise to fame and her fated relationship with her musical partner and husband Ike, premiered at Hackney Empire earlier this year to critical acclaim.

The musical biopic features classic songs including What’s Love Got To Do With It, Proud Mary, Private Dancer, River Deep Mountain High and the iconic Simply The Best, as the story follows the highs and lows, the passion and the heartbreak as Ike and Tina’s careers blossom and their marriage crumbles.

Hairspray actress Wokoma was described by the Evening Standard as “unstoppable” for her performance as the famous diva at Hackney Empire, with The Telegraph saying: “Wokoma’s sensational turn as Tina should be the making of her… a voice that could make your hair stand on end.”

Her co-star Tummings returns to the London stage following appearances in The Harder They Come and The Big Life at the Theatre Royal Stratford East and Fabulation at the Tricycle theatre.

Soul Sister will follow The Sunshine Boys into the Savoy theatre when the Thea Sharrock-directed comedy ends its run on 28 July.
