Regent’s Park’s Jesus Christ Superstar returns to London

Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre‘s Olivier Award-winning production of Jesus Christ Superstar will transfer to the Barbican Theatre for a short run next year.

Following huge success in 2016 and 2017 at the Open Air Theatre, a run in Chicago this year, Jesus Christ Superstar will play at the Barbican for just 60 performances between 4 July and 24 August 2019.

The production first played on these shores to a resounding reception, starring Tyrone Huntley as Judas, and winning the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival in 2017. You can see the show’s performance at the Olivier Awards 2017 with Mastercard ceremony below.

Following the run at the Barbican next year, director Timothy Sheader’s revival will embark on a North American Tour in Autumn 2019.

Casting for Jesus Christ Superstar in 2019 will be announced in due course. The multi-award-winning show has design by Tom Scutt, choreography by Drew McOnie, musical direction by Tom Deering, lighting design by Lee Curran and sound design by Nick Lidster for Autograph.

Loosely based on the Gospels’ accounts of the last week of Jesus’ life, the show details the interpersonal struggles between Jesus and Judas Iscariot through rip-roaringly powerful and punchy music. With a renowned score including I Don’t Know How To Love Him, Gethsemane and Superstar, and spectacle, comedy and heart-breaking betrayal in abundance, this production promises an epic experience.

Public booking for the London run will open at 11am on Friday 16 November 2018.
