Olivier Award-winning actor Nigel Harman is to direct a major West End season of two Steven Berkoff one-act plays at Trafalgar Studios 2 this autumn.

Playing in tandem for five weeks from Thursday 6 October, the two productions, Lunch and The Bow Of Ulysses, explore the dynamic between a couple at various stages in their relationship, focusing on their first meeting – a one-night-stand with devastating consequences – and thence how they fare after two decades of marriage.

With casting to be announced, Harman, who recently scooped the Olivier Award for Best Supporting Performance for his role in Shrek The Musical, will lead a team including the Olivier Award-nominated sound designers Ben and Max Ringham, designer Lee Newby (Grand Hotel), lighting designer Joshua Carr (Hangmen) and choreographer Alistair David.

Of the announcement, Harman said: “I am thrilled to have the opportunity of working on two of Steven Berkoff’s rarely performed short plays.

“When I first read them I was struck by the caustic beauty of the writing. Berkoff manages to amuse, horrify and move all in one sentence. And his instinct for the human condition, with all it’s flaws and wonders, is unique. I’m intrigued to put these plays on stage and see how an audience will react.”
