Motown The Musical extends West End run

Published 12 February 2016

Following its first London preview last night, Motown The Musical has released 200,000 extra tickets and extended its booking period to 18 February 2017.

While the Broadway hit has yet to have its official opening night, with the press due to offer their opinions on 8 March, the early doors extension is due to public demand for the Motown hit-packed production.

Featuring a 16-piece orchestra and cast including Cedric Neal, Lucy St. Louis and Sifiso Mazibuko, the show tells the incredible real-life story of Berry Gordy, the man behind the legendary Motown record label and its staggering catalogue featuring artists including Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye.

Penned by Gordy himself, Motown The Musical charts the mogul’s journey from featherweight boxer to heavyweight music producer to tell the story of one of the greatest and most influential record labels in the history of popular music.

The show made its world premiere in 2013 in New York, earning four Tony Award nominations. It has subsequently been seen across the US and is set to return to Broadway later this year.

Writing exclusively for Official London Theatre, director Charles Randolph-Wright explained the show’s importance saying: “The world needs this music again. We must come together, and that is the story of Motown The Musical. It’s not just the tremendous Motown catalogue; it is the story of taking chances, chances that change the world.”
