Matt Cardle to join Strictly Ballroom

You loved him at West End LIVE. Now, you’ll be able to see (almost) every night of the week! Multi-platinum selling artist, Matt Cardle, will be donning some sequins, putting on an Aussie accent and singing his heart out as the narrator, Wally Strand, in Strictly Ballroom The Musical from the end of this month.

Matt first became a crowd-pleasing act when he won The X Factor in 2010. Since, he’s been nominated for a BRIT Award for Best Single and sold over 2 million albums. He made his West End debut in 2015 when he appeared in Memphis alongside Beverly Knight. And, as mentioned previously, he’s swept the West End LIVE crowds off their feet for the past few years.

About joining the cast, Matt said: “I’m so excited to be returning to the West End… It’s so rare that a role comes around that you can put so much of your own stamp on. I have seen the show and it’s absolutely incredible. Baz Luhrmann is an utter genius, as is Drew McOnie. To have the opportunity to sing all these huge songs every night is a real honour.”

Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom follows Scott Hastings – a ballroom champion who dares to break the mould and dance his own steps during a competition. His arrogance and unwillingness to conform lead to him losing his dance partner forcing him to pair with a beginner, Fran. Together the unlikely couple defies tradition with moves that aren’t “strictly ballroom” and find dance isn’t the only thing they love…

Strictly Ballroom features over 30 classic hits including Time After Time, Let’s Dance, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, Dancing With Myself, It’s the End of the World as We Know It, and Love is in the Air.

Matt will be taking the role currently played by Pop Idol winner Will Young on 31st July.
