Loved the film? You’ll love the musical

Last night, Heathers The Musical officially opened and it absolutely KILLED IT! The crowds went wild for Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe’s dark comic musical. And, really, are we surprised? With Carrie Hope Fletcher in lead as Veronica and Jamie Muscato playing her bad-boy boyfriend JD, you’d think that’d be enough star power to fuel this explosive show. But, the cast is made up of exemplary performers who all have their moment to shine. Don’t believe us? Just watch the crowd’s reaction during the standing ovation.

Based on the cult classic film, Heathers – starring Wynona Ryder and Christian Slater – it’s got us thinking about all those other film-to-stage productions you can see in the West End. So, if you loved Heathers (or couldn’t get a ticket) here are some other shows you’ll probably love because you loved the film.

School Of Rock

Based on the 2003 comedy starring Jack Black, School Of Rock tells of a wayward musician who finds himself without a job, without a band and without a plan. Intercepting a call for his flatmate, he winds up taking a substitute teacher position at a prestigious private school where he teaches the value of rock… but not Maths, Enligh and Science.

Kinky Boots

The Olivier and Tony Award-winner came to be after the 2005 film that tells the true story of a man who inherits a failing shoe factory which leads to him forming an unlikely business partnership with a drag artist. Packed with sequins, glamour and a whole lot of love, it’s a feel-good show that will have you searching for your very own Kinky Boots.

Disney’s Aladdin

The Prince Of Thieves stole everyone’s heart back in 1992 when Disney released the animated film which quickly rocketed to many people’s fave list. Since, the musical has been taking people on a magic carpet ride of West End brilliance. Stop wishing. See your childhood hero come to life.

Matilda The Musical

Which came first, the book or the film? Well, clearly it’s the book. But each incantation of Roald Dahl’s much-loved tale is unique and offers its own charm. The RSC’s multi-award-winning show has been enchanting West End audiences since 2011. So go on. Be a little bit naughty. You deserve it.

Young Frankenstein

The Oscar-nominated Mel Brooke’s film made a generation howl with laughter and put Putting On The Ritz on the map in 1074. And last year’s stage adaptation has done exactly the same for West End goers. Filled with cheeky jokes, tongue-in-cheek songs and a whole lot of silliness, Young Frankenstein will give you LIFE!

Strictly Ballroom

So. Much. FUN! The era-defying Baz Luhrmann film rekindled the world’s love of ballroom dancing. And this year’s musical has rekindled the West End’s love for joyful shows. Full of colour, fake tan and pop songs sung live by Will Young, this live-action version of the cult 90s film will have you feeling the love in the air.

Disney’s The Lion King

The pride of the West End, The Lion King has been wowing audiences for 19 years. The pioneering show brings animals to life with innovative and industry-changing puppets. Set to those spine-tingling Elton John songs from the film, it’s a walk down memory lane which you’ll want to do again and again.
