Globe’s Malfi to debut in cinemas

Shakespeare’s Globe’s production of The Duchess Of Malfi starring Gemma Arterton will receive its big screen debut on 26 February when it’s screened in cinemas worldwide as part of Shakespeare’s Globe On Screen.

The Bankside venue’s production of John Webster’s dark tale is joined in the season of screenings by four of the Globe’s main stage shows: Julius Caesar (26 March), Antony & Cleopatra (30 April), Titus Andronicus (4 June) and The Comedy Of Errors (25 June).

Led by Made In Dagenham’s Arterton, The Duchess Of Malfi became the first production to open in the Bankside venue’s indoor Sam Wanamaker Playhouse in January 2014, when Official London Theatre’s Matthew Amer described the show as “mak[ing] a striking impact in this exciting new space”.

The first ever theatrical production to be filmed entirely by candlelight, Dominic Dromgoole’s take on the 16th century tragedy saw Arterton joined by a cast including David Dawson, James Garnon, Sean Gilder, Denise Gough and Alex Waldmann in the tale of a widowed duchess whose brothers exact a terrible revenge when she resolves to marry the steward Antonio.

Talking about Shakespeare’s Globe On Screen, which is now in its fifth year, Mark Foster, CEO of the Globe’s screening partner Arts Alliance, said: “We’re thrilled to be bringing Globe On Screen back to cinemas with such an exceptional line-up for 2015. Authentically capturing the unique candlelit setting of this production of The Duchess Of Malfi on film is an incredible achievement and a stunning opening to the new season. These remarkable films will be a delight for cinema audiences around the world.”

Screenings will take place in locations across the UK, Europe, North America and Australasia. To find your nearest participating cinema and to book tickets, visit www.globeonscreen.com
