Game Of Thrones star brings bears to Soho

Published 30 June 2015

Actor Jack Gleeson, best known for playing Game Of Thrones’ tyrant teenage monarch Joffrey Baratheon, will star alongside puppet bears at Soho Theatre this summer.

The star of the HBO drama will swap blood, murder, incest, gratuitous nudity, more blood, political intrigue and more murder for space travelling furry friends when Bears In Space plays at the off-West End venue from 3 to 22 August.

The show, which played in Edinburgh last year, follows a pair of cosmonaut bears who are pursued by outlaws as they speed towards the limits of the universe.

Speaking about the show, Gleeson said: “Bears In Space is a sci-fi comedy powerhouse with a heart of gold. It will not just make you smile at the comedy and cool-world creation but also at the themes of love and loyalty that underpin it. Friendships and romantic relationships should be fought for and nurtured, even if it takes a butt-load of work to do so.”

The show, which was described as “truly great” by Fest Mag, grew out of the pilot for a children’s TV show that the team from Collapsing Horse Theatre Company enjoyed doing so much they turned it into a longer stage piece for adults. It also stars Aaron Heffernan and Eoghan Quinn, and features live music by Cameron Macaulay.

Gleeson joins a number of Game Of Thrones alumni on the London stage this summer. Jonathan Pryce, who played the High Sparrow in the latest series, has recently finished performances of The Merchant Of Venice at Shakespeare’s Globe, while Ciarán Hinds (Mance Rayder) will star opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in Hamlet at the Barbican and Michelle Fairley (Catelyn Stark) appears in Splendour at the Donmar Warehouse.
