The much-rumoured musical adaptation of From Here To Eternity, featuring lyrics by Sir Tim Rice, will premiere at the Shaftesbury theatre next autumn.

The production, based on James Jones’ award-winning novel of 1951 that went on inspire the classic film, will begin its London run on 30 September before opening to the press on 23 October.

Set on the island of Oahu shortly before the attack on Pearl Harbour and based loosely on Jones’ own experiences of life in the Hawaiian Division’s 27th Infantry, From Here To Eternity is a tale of passion and honour among a group of soldiers.

The production marks the West End debut of composer Stuart Brayson and is the first stage musical by Rice (Chess, Evita, Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat) in a decade.

Though no casting information has been announced, the show has revealed that Tamara Harvey will direct. The former Associate Director at the Bush theatre boasts credits including Educating Rita at the Menier Chocolate Factory, The Kitchen Sink at the Bush and the national tour of Tell Me On A Sunday.

From Here To Eternity moves into the Shaftesbury theatre following the summer season of hit dance show Burn The Floor, which begins in March following the conclusion of big-haired soft rock musical Rock Of Age’s run.
