Actor Tim Curry has been forced to withdraw from the upcoming production of Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead, which will open at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in June.

According to an official statement, an “on-going chest infection and repeated asthma attacks” led to Curry leaving the production, which is currently playing in Chichester prior to its West End opening.

Curry, who is best known for screen roles in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Annie and It, was playing the Player opposite Samuel Barnett and Jamie Parker in the title roles.

The statement, from Chichester’s Executive Director Alan Finch, confirmed that: “For the moment the production will continue with the role of the Player taken by Curry’s understudy, Chris Andrew Mellon, while we consider our longer-term options.”
