Casting announced for Tricycle’s Arabian Nights

Published 1 November 2012

Full casting has been announced for Lu Kemp’s forthcoming production of The Arabian Nights at the Tricycle theatre.

Jonathan Bonnici, Denton Chikura, Tunji Falana, Sandy Grierson, Éva Magyar, Itxaso Moreno, Adura Onashile, Tahirah Sharif, Harmage Singh Kalirai, Ony Uhiara and Hemi Yeroham will appear in Mary Zimmerman’s new play, which is adapted from The Book Of A Thousand Nights And One Night, from 30 November to 12 January.

Kalirai, whose stage credits include The Illusion at the Old Vic theatre, returns to the Tricycle theatre following his performance in Dragon, while Uhara, whose credits include Motor Town and Fallout at the Royal Court and Much Ado About Nothing at Shakespeare’s Globe, previously appeared at the Kilburn venue in Walk Hard, Talk Loud.

Bonnici’s stage credits include the National Theatre’s The Black Album, Chikura has appeared at the National Theatre in Six Seeds and Magyar, who has appeared on screen in X Men: First Class, has appeared in productions including The Wild Bride and The Bacchae for Kneehigh Theatre.

Sharif was last seen on the London stage earlier this year in the National Theatre’s production of Moon On A Rainbow Shawl and Moreno recently appeared at the Unicorn theatre in children’s mystery The Legend Of Captain Crow’s Feet.

Grierson’s theatre credits include Headlong’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The 13 Midnight Challenges Of Angelus Diablo for the RSC, while Falana has appeared in productions including Ya Get Me at the Old Vic.

The first festive show to play at the Tricycle theatre, The Arabian Nights tells the story of a young woman in Baghdad who starts a revolution through the power of storytelling in an attempt to stop the bloodshed being caused by King Shahyar.

Talking about the production Artistic Director Indhu Rubasingham said: “This version promises to offer something different for young people as well as adults. It will be very cool with magical moments and superb story telling which will be humorous, dark and engaging.”

The Arabian Nights will open at the Tricycle theatre following Adrian Lester’s acclaimed performance in Lolita Chakrabarti’s Red Velvet, which plays until 24 November.
