Casting announced for Globe’s The White Devil

Shakespeare’s Globe is delighted to announce that Kate Stanley-Brennan, Jamie Ballard, Joseph Timms, Paul Bazely and Michael Feast will star in John Webster’s The White Devil, from 26 January. Kurt Egyiawan, Sam Spruell, Natalie Klamar, Thalissa Teixeira and Joanna Horton will star in Othello, from 23 February. 

Directed by Annie Ryan, The White Devil runs from 26 January, with Kate Stanley-Brennan in the lead role as Vittoria. Kate’s theatre credits include The Night Alive (Lyric Belfast),  Hedda Gabler, The Risen People, The Plough and the Stars, Terminus, Playboy of the Western World (Abbey Theatre), Wuthering Heights, Salome (Gate Theatre) and Yerma (West Yorkshire Playhouse/National Theatre Studio). Screen credits include Dollhouse, Chasing Green, Dublin in Pieces, Speed Dating, Raw (RTE), Tudors (Showtime) and Fair City (RTE).

Jamie Ballard will play the Duke Brachiano. Jamie’s recent theatre credits include Ghosts (Manchester Home), King John (Rose Theatre), Missing Dates, Michael, Japes Too (Hampstead Theatre), Macbeth (Jamie Lloyd Productions), Hamlet (Tobacco Factory), Troilus and Cressida (Shakespeare’s Globe), Scenes from an Execution, Antigone, Emperor & Galilean, Warhorse, Some Trace of Her, Saint Joan (National Theatre), The Merchant of Venice, Measure for Measure, Written on the Heart and Much Ado About Nothing (RSC). His screen credits include Suffragette, The Hollow Crown (BBC), Three Girls (BBC), Penny Dreadful (Showtime) and Ripper Street (BBC Two).

Flamineo will be played by Joseph Timms. Joseph’s previous work for Shakespeare’s Globe includes Twelfth Night and Richard III (Broadway run), The Taming of the Shrew, Henry IV Parts I & II and Bedlam. Other recent theatre includes A Tale of Two Cities (Royal & Derngate and tour), The Hudsucker Proxy (Nuffield Southampton/ Liverpool Everyman), Bracken Moor (Tricycle Theatre), Privates on Parade (Noel Coward Theatre), Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me (Southwark Playhouse) and Twelfth Night (National Theatre). Screen credits include Atlantis (BBC One), Amerikan Kanibal (Discovery), Doctors (BBC) and Casualty (BBC).

Paul Bazely will play Francisco. Paul’s theatre credits include Drawing the Line (Hampstead Theatre), The Djinns of Eidgah (Royal Court), Really Old Like 45 and Hamlet (National Theatre). Screen credits include Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Vanity Fair, Benidorm (ITV), Black Mirror (Netflix), The Hollow Crown (BBC), Doctor Who (BBC), The IT Crowd (Channel 4) and Wuthering Heights (BBC). Monticelso will be played by Michael Feast. Michael’s extensive career on stage and screen includes recent roles in Macbeth (Chichester and West End), The Caretaker (Gate Theatre), After Darwin (Hampstead), Three Sisters (Young Vic), Pygmalion (Garrick Theatre) and Plague Over England (Duchess Theatre). His film credits include Penelope, Sleepy Hollow, Velvet Goldmine and The Draughtsman’s Contract. Recent television includes Game of Thrones (HBO), Rebellion (RTE) and State of Play (BBC).

Drawing the winter season to a close Ellen McDougall’s Othello runs from 23 February, with Kurt Egyiawan in the titular role. Kurt returns to the Globe after roles in Measure for Measure, Henry V, King Lear, The Frontline and the Broadway run of Twelfth Night and Richard III (Belasco Theatre). Other recent stage credits include The Crossing Plays (Royal Court), The Rise and Shine of Comrade Fiasco (Gate Theatre), A Season in the Congo (Young Vic), Berenice (Donmar Warehouse) and Earthquakes in London (Headlong). Film credits include Beasts of No Nation, Pan, Kill Your Friends, Skyfall and The Exorcist. 

Sam Spruell will play Iago. Sam’s recent theatre includes Shopping and F**king (Lyric Hammersmith), Clybourne Park (Royal Court and West End), The Caretaker (Bath Theatre Royal) and Pornography (Birmingham Rep/Traverse Theatre). Film includes Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, Morgan, Sand Castle, The Lady in the Van, Legend, Taken 3, Snow White and the Huntsman and The Hurt Locker. Television includes The Bastard Executioner (Fox TV), Catastrophe (Channel 4), Cardinal Burns II (Channel 4), The Last Ship (TNT), Eternal Law (ITV) and Luther (BBC).

Desdemona will be played by Natalie Klamar. Natalie’s recent theatre includes Cleansed, I Want My Hat Back (National Theatre), Future Conditional (Old Vic), The Cherry Orchard (Young Vic), This May Hurt a Bit (Out of Joint/UK Tour), All’s Well That Ends Well, As You Like It, Hamlet, A Soldier in Every Son – Rise of the Aztecs, King John, Richard III (RSC), Breakfast at Tiffany’s (Theatre Royal Haymarket) and The Exquisite Corpse (Southwark Playhouse). Screen credits include Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone, Holby City (BBC), Midsomer Murders (ITV), Misfits (Channel 4) and Doctors (BBC).

Thalissa Teixeira will play Emilia. Thalissa’s previous work for the Globe includes The Broken Heart and The Changeling. Other recent stage credits include Yerma (Young Vic), The Night Watch (Manchester Royal Exchange), BU21 (Theatre 503), and Electra (Old Vic). Screen credits include The Musketeers (BBC), Midsomer Murders (ITV), and Takedown.  Joanna Horton will play Cassio. Joanna’s recent theatre includes As You Like It, All’s Well that Ends Well, The Gods Weep, Days of Significance (RSC) and Belongings (Hampstead Theatre). Her screen credits include Fish Tank, Dark Angel (ITV), The Children Next Door (Channel 4), Silent Witness (BBC) and Partners in Crime (BBC).
