American Idiot extends London run

Green Day’s award-winning rock musical American Idiot will run for an additional week in London later this year due to an overwhelming demand for tickets.

The musical was due to play between 3 and 9 December but will now run for a second week of performances at the HMV Hammersmith Apollo in London between 11 and 15 December 2012.

Set in a post 9/11 world, American Idiot tells the story of three young male friends and their struggle to find a meaning in life. The boys are torn between their safe but stifling homes in suburbia and the exhilarating freedom of the city, which leads them on an emotional journey from angry youth to jaded adulthood.

Written by Green Day’s lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong along with Michael Mayer, American Idiot features hit songs from the rock band’s Grammy Award-winning concept album of the same title, including Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, Wake Me Up When September Ends and Holiday as well as songs from the band’s 2009 album 21st Century Breakdown and an unreleased love song entitled When It’s Time.

After its UK premiere in Southampton this October, American Idiot will embark on a tour of the UK and Ireland before finishing in London in December.

Following its premiere at Berkeley Repertory Theatre in September 2009, the show opened on Broadway in 2010 where it ran for over a year and picked up two Tony Awards and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.

American Idiot is staged by a highly-acclaimed creative team including Tony Award-winning director Mayer, British Olivier Award-winning choreographer Steven Hoggett and Tony Award-winning scenic designer Christine Jones.
