US star John Lithgow leads the cast of The Magistrate, Arthur W Pinero’s Victorian farce packed with deception and carousing.

It is hard to believe Cis Farringdon is only 14, what with his rather more adult taste for gambling, port and women. That may be because he’s not; his mother, Agatha, chopped five years from her age and his when she married the amiable Posket. But now Cis’ godfather is on the way and she must warn her son of the deception. Unfortunately he’s convinced his otherwise staid stepfather to embark on a night of carousing that will end up with a police raid and guests of the Hotel des Princes attempting to hide themselves from the law and each other.

American actor Lithgow was won five Emmy Awards, two Tony Awards and two Golden Globes in a career that has included appearances in TV series including 3rd Rock From The Sun and Dexter, films The World According To Garp, Terms Of Endearment, Footloose, Shrek and Rise Of The Planet Of Apes, and stage productions including The Changing Room and Sweet Smell Of Success on Broadway and Twelfth Night with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

He is joined in The Magistrate by Olivier Award-winning actress Nancy Carroll, who won the coveted award for her performance in the National Theatre’s production of After The Dance.
