English National Opera presents a brand new production of Wagner’s earliest masterpiece, The Flying Dutchman.

A tale of tested love, The Flying Dutchman tells the story of the title character, a cursed sea captain who must sail forever, only allowed to set foot on the shore every seven years. His blasphemous crime will be wiped from his slate if, when ashore, he can find a wife who will be true to him.

The daughter of another sailor, Senta, knows the legend and is determined to save The Flying Dutchman. Unbeknownst to her, the stranger she meets one night is the ghostly captain himself, to whom she swears eternal fidelity. But, as they say, the course of true love never runs smoothly.

The Flying Dutchman marks the first time that ENO’s Music Director Edward Gardner has conducted a Wagner opera.
