Based on a true story, Rue Magique is a moving rite of passage tale, charting the journey of a young girl, Sugar, the daughter of Desdemona, a Brixton brothel owner originally from Jamaica.

The story contrasts Sugar's discovery of young love with local boy Rem and her horrific introduction to to prostitution, both on her 13th birthday. Her search for the identity of her father parallels her search for her own identity with devastating, and finally redemptive, consequences.

Orginally devised in 1999 as a short musical piece based on the experiences of young people from a children's charity, Rue Magique has since been developed into a full length musical.

Desdemona is played by Melanie LaBarrie, a West End regular who has appeared in Mary Poppins, Les Miserables and Daddy Cool.
