Romola Garai stars as Isabella in Joe Hill-Gibbins’ take on Shakespeare’s dark comedy of injustice, sexual politics and disguise at the Young Vic.

Set in a Vienna heaving with sex and corruption where even the authorities are up to no good, Measure For Measure charts the story of the Duke as he leaves his deputy Angelo to clean up the city’s reputation while he observes in disguise. Abusing his power, Angelo forces young nun Isabella to choose between saving her brother’s life or breaking her vow of chastity.

Hill-Gibbins brings this deeply emotional but sexy take on the Bard’s study of virtue and sin to the Young Vic following his acclaimed production of The Changeling at the venue.

Garai makes her Young Vic debut in the show, returning to the London stage following performances in The Village Bike at the Royal Court, Three Sisters at the Lyric Hammersmith and Calico in the West End.
