Born in Jamaica, the remarkable Mary Seacole grew up with a passion for travelling, a gift for healing and a profound knowledge of herbal remedies learnt from her Creole mother. Despite being turned down by The War Office and rejected by Florence Nightingale, she took herself to The Crimea where she set up her unique field hospital and relieved the suffering of many wounded soldiers.
