The tale of an inventor and his mechanical toy is told through ballet and the music of Delibes.

Dr Coppélius keeps a young girl in his home, who ignores both the friendship of Swanilda and Franz. However, she is not what she seems; she is really an invention. As the story unfolds, the reckless abandon of youth is offset against the stylised movements of the auotmata.
