Drama Roadkill, which was staged at the Theatre Royal Stratford East, has won the Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre Olivier Award.

Based on real experiences, the show, which was conceived and directed by Cora Bissett, told a brutal story about sex trafficking today, sharing the harrowing details of a young woman trapped in a living nightmare.

Beginning and ending at the Theatre Royal Stratford East, which produced the London season in association with the Barbican, Roadkill took audiences away from the safety of a theatre auditorium on a minibus journey into East London to tell its story.

Speaking after accepting the award, the venue’s Artistic Director Kerry Michael described the win as “testament to an understanding of our work and it shows they [the Olivier Awards’ panel] get the importance of the work.”

This is the second time that the Theatre Royal Stratford East has won the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre, following the 2007 success of Pied Piper.

In winning the award, Roadkill beat tough opposition from Mogadishu (Lyric Hammersmith), Salt, Root And Roe (Donmar Warehouse at the Trafalgar Studios 2) and The Village Bike (Royal Court Jerwood Theatre Upstairs).
