Olivier Award winner Jack Lowden will join the previously announced Kristin Scott Thomas in Ian Rickson’s production of Electra at the Old Vic this autumn.
The Scottish actor, who triumphed earlier this year in the Best Actor in a Supporting Role category for his performance in Ghosts, is joined in the cast by Amanda Drew and Diana Quick.
Frank McGuinness’ adaptation of Sophocles’ classic drama, which charts the story of Electra and Orestes’ revenge on the family members who murdered their father, plays at the Waterloo venue from 22 September (press night 1 October) to 20 December.
The production marks Lowden’s return to the London stage following his critically acclaimed performance in the Ibsen classic that earned him his prestigious accolade. Prior to his prize-winning appearance, he was seen on the London stage in Chariots Of Fire at the Hampstead Theatre and in the West End, and Olivier Award-winning play Blackwatch at the Barbican Theatre.
Lowden will take on the role of Orestes alongside Quick as his on-stage mother Clytemnestra and Drew as Chrysothemis. While Quick is best known as Lady Julia Flyte in Brideshead Revisited, her stage credits include Anna In The Tropics at the Hampstead Theatre and If We Are Women in the West End. EastEnders and Broadchurch actress Drew has previously appeared on stage in Simon Stephens’ hit adaptation of The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time and John Gabriel Borkman at the National Theatre.
They are joined in the cast by Golda Rosheuvel, who is due to appear in the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre’s production of The Gershwins’ Porgy And Bess this summer, Peter Wight, who returns to the Old Vic following his appearance in 2013’s Much Ado About Nothing, and Thalissa Teixeira.
Scott Thomas will take on the title character when Electra opens in the autumn. It follows Yaël Farber’s reimagining of Arthur Miller’s classic The Crucible, which plays at the venue until 13 September.
