Tennessee Williams’ classic play The Night Of The Iguana is revived in the West End with a star-studded cast including Clive Owen, Anna Gunn and Lia Williams.
With the play marking Owen’s first appearance in the West End in 18 years, you can be sure The Night Of The Iguana tickets will be in hot demand. Set in 1940s Mexico, Owen will portray Reverend T. Lawrence Shannon, a disgraced priest turned tourist guide, and leader of a group of lost souls who arrive at a run-down hotel.
There, Shannon is reunited with his long-term friend turned grieving widow, Maxine Faulk (Gunn). As Shannon struggles emotionally, the group are joined by spinster Hannah Jelkes (Williams) and her 97 year old poet grandfather (Game of Thrones’ Julian Glover), and chaos unfolds. Set to the backdrop of a tropical rainstorm and the unfurling Second World War, an epic battle between flesh and spirit, between art and faith, and between captivity and freedom, is on the horizon.
The Night Of The Iguana was first staged as a one-act play in 1959, but later developed by Tennesee Williams into a full-length version. The play as we know it now premiered on Broadway in 1961, going on to be adapted into an Academy Award-winning film in 1964 starring Richard Burton, Ava Gardner and Deborah Kerr.
Clive Owen is a Golden Globe-winning actor perhaps best known for his leading roles in films including Children Of Men, Sin City and Closer (a role which saw him nominated for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor). He will perform in the show opposite Anna Gunn, well known for her role as Skyler opposite Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad, and Lia Williams, whose catalogue of roles include appearances in The Crown and Kiri.
The last major West End revival of The Night Of The Iguana took place in 2005 at the Lyric Theatre, and starred Woody Harrelson as Reverend Shannon, opposite Clare Higgins as Maxine and Jenny Seagrove as Hannah. London has also recently seen the likes of Alfred Molina and Eileen Atkins in these starring roles.
The show will be directed by James Macdonald, whose recent West End credits include Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? with Imelda Staunton.
