Stephen Mangan and Kara Tointon return to the West End to star in Sean Foley’s new adaptation of classic comedy The Man In The White Suit.

Making its world premiere at Wyndham’s Theatre, the classic Ealing Studios film The Man In The White Suit follows an inventor whose ingenuity threatens manufacturers and trade unions alike. Based on the iconic 1951 Ealing Studios film, the show is adapted and directed by Sean Foley, a double Olivier Award-winner renowned for his hilarious comedies.

When Sidney Stratton (Stephen Mangan) invents a fabric that never gets dirty and never wears out, he sends shockwaves throughout the business world. Manufacturers and trades unions alike are terrified by the prospect of what it could do to their industry – and their jobs.

Sympathy is forthcoming from Daphne (Kara Tointon) the mill owner’s daughter. But soon, Sidney’s support begins to dwindle, as bosses and workers chase the man in the white suit determined to destroy them both. This fast-moving comedy reunites Stephen and Sean, who also created the Olivier Award-winning production Jeeves And Wooster.

Stephen Mangan’s many stage appearances include The Birthday Party, Jeeves and Wooster and The Norman Conquests, for which he received a Tony Award nomination. His many screen credits include the lead as Sean in Episodes for the BBC, and for the BAFTA-winning Green Wing. Kara Tointon’s stage credits include Olivia in Twelfth Night for the RSC, Ayckbourn’s Relatively Speaking, and Absent Friends, and as Eliza in Pygmalion. The Royle Family and Coronation Street actress Sue Johnston plays Mrs Watson.

An acclaimed writer and director, Sean Foley’s many West End productions include The Dresser, The Miser and The Painkiller. Sean was recently appointed the next Artistic Director at Birmingham Rep. For The Man In The White Suit, he joins forces with Designer Michael Taylor, with whom he also created the five-time Olivier nominee The Ladykillers.

The famous film of The Man In The White Suit, released in 1951, starred Alec Guinness alongside Joan Greenwood and Cecil Parker. It was Academy Award nominated for its brilliant screenplay. On stage, the show will feature fourteen performers, including actor-musicians, and a specially written score.
