Reasons to see: Romantics Anonymous – Animated Gif edition!

By Jim Glaub, Published October 30, 2017

I saw the charming, cute and delightful new musical Romantics Anonymous on Friday night and the only way I felt I could really do the show justice was to give you a “Reasons to see” in animated gifs!

First of all, it’s always fun to go to the Shakespeare’s Globe. With its roots deep in the very heart of British Theatre, you can feel the history in the air. Check out our Southbank Theatreland neighbourhood section if you are interested in the area.

This is one of the most charming shows I’ve seen in years. Romantics Anonymous is a clever, cute, sweet, joyous new milk tray of a musical. #adorbs

The musical is adapted from the 2012 French-Belgian film Les Émotifs Anonymes

Directed by the-ever-so charming Emma Rice, it’s hard to believe this is her first full musical as a director. There’s no one better to take this film and make it into a theatrical treasure. This is Emma’s last season as the Artistic Director of the Shakespeare’s Globe, so you won’t want to miss the cherry on top of her beautiful season. I have a feeling there will be more musicals in her future. YES, PLEASE!

At the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse inside the Globe, you can get seats for £10 in the upper circle (standing).

The composition of this musical is by London newcomer Michael Kooman and he’s one to watch. The musicians were amazing. The final song was on the tip of everyone’s tongues.

The story is a mix of Amelie, Chocolat, with touch of Waitress and a dash of Kinky Boots. We follow an awkward chocolatier who uses an anonymous group setting to deal with her romantic issues. She finds work at a failing chocolate factory where she’ll meet her boss, who is as awkward and weird as she is, and a budding romance begins.

Carly Bawden was simply wonderful in this piece. She played it with vulnerability, and her voice was rich and smooth, like a delicious dollop of liquid chocolate.

Joanna Riding is amazing as every other character. Her most memorable is the churlish assistant to the owner of the factory. The supporting cast are invaluable to making this a great show.

This show knows exactly what you would expect with a title like that: a sweet romantic comedy with a giant heart.
