The Olivier Award-winning production Legally Blonde The Musical has announced it will close on 7 April after a three year run at the Savoy theatre.
Jerry Mitchell’s musical transformed the Savoy theatre into a pink haven to home the stage adaptation of the 2001 film, following a Broadway run. The production opened to a host of four star reviews in January 2010 with The Independent’s Paul Taylor declaring: “I had thought snootily that the stage show of Legally Blonde might put the “ugh” in “euuuugh!” But omigod was I like totally blown away.”
Set in the prestigious halls of Harvard Law and the colourful rooms of Elle Woods’s sorority house, Legally Blonde The Musical tells the story of Elle’s pledge to put down her credit cards and hit the books in order to win back the heart of her ex-boyfriend Warner.
The production features music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin with songs including Omigod You Guys, So Much Better and Whipped Into Shape.
Sheridan Smith, who originated the role of Woods, won critical acclaim for her portrayal of the fluffy but gutsy blonde, taking home the much lauded Best Actress in a Musical Olivier Award.
Current stars, Carley Stenson, Stephen Ashfield and Ben Freeman, as well as original cast member Peter Davison, will continue in their roles until the show finishes its run.
Fans of the show will be pleased to hear that Legally Blonde will continue its UK tour and plans are in place for an Australian production to open in Sydney later this year.
No plans have yet been announced as to what will replace the production at the Savoy theatre.
