Classic musical Sweet Charity follows the misadventures of love encountered by the gullible and guileless Charity Hope Valentine, a woman who always gives her heart and her dreams to the wrong man.
Originally directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse, Sweet Charity premiered on Broadway in 1966, where it ran for over 600 performances. The production won the Tony Award for Best Choreography in the same year. In 1967 the production opened in London at the Prince of Wales theatre, starring Juliet Prowse. The famous 1969 film version, also directed and choreographed by Fosse, starred Shirley MacLaine and John McMartin.
Cy Coleman’s Sweet Charity score features such favourite hits as Hey Big Spender, If My Friends Could See Me Now and The Rhythm Of Life.
The cast of the Menier Chocolate Factory production of Sweet Charity is led by Tamzin Outhwaite, who is best known for her appearances in long-running TV series including EastEnders, Hotel Babylon and current ITV drama The Fixer. Her theatre credits include Boeing Boeing, Oliver! Breathing Corpses and Flesh Wound.
Sweet Charity is the latest in a string of Menier musical revivals including Sunday In The Park With George, Little Shop Of Horrors, A Little Night Music and La Cage Aux Folles, all of which transferred to the West End.
