Jonas Kaufmann plays Don Carlo, who has fallen in love with his step-mother, Elizabeth of Valois. His father, Philip II of Spain, fears the worst. Around this tragic central triangle, complicated by the intervention of Princess Eboli, is the conflict between authoritarian religion, represented by the Grand Inquisitor and the libreal Marquis of Posa.
